READ THE TEXT CAREFULLY THEN DO THE ACTIVITIES

As the Greek historian Herodotus once said ‘Egypt of the gift of the Nile’, the Nile River was the ancient Egyptians’ best friend even it did flood every year. In the fall, the great river would overflow its banks. At first the Egyptians lost their crops their houses and in some cases their lives. However, the Egyptian people noticed after a time that the floods came about the same time every year, in June. Therefore, they planned: they would make sure nothing important was on the banks of the river when it was time for the flood
Then after the water level went back down, they would quickly plant new crops. The floods brought good fresh soil up onto the land .This soil was ideal for planting grains.
The river also gave them the chance to fish. The Egyptians would build boats out of the wood and sail up and down the river. They would use spears and nets to catch fish as well as birds that flew close to the surface of the water.
The Nile also provided protection from attack. People wanting to invade Egypt would have first to cross the river, which was very wide in places. The Egyptians could stand on their own side of the river and throw spears at their r attackers. Any attacker who did cross the river was likely to be tired from making the crossing.
Another important way that the Nile helped the ancient Egyptians was in trade. Goods went to and from the Egypt down an up the Nile, which had its mouth at the Mediterranean sea . [PERSONAL REFERENCE]

Some people may feel upset that shops during this holiday season failed to meet their expectations. Not Bill Talent, a New York priest, who has been going on the streets of the city exhorting people to resist the temptation to shop and the demon of consumerism.
Shoppers, he believes, have little regard for how or where or by whom the products are made. They have almost no resistance to the media messages that encourage them, around the clock, to want things and buy them. He sees a population lost in consumption, and the meaning of individual life vanished in a fog of wanting, buying and owning too many things.
‘Consumerism is a dull way of life,’ he says. ‘That’s why I am trying to stop this frenzy and the buy-nothing-day is meant to reduce its intensity.’
It is not that Bill Talent thinks that no one should ever buy anything. On a recent afternoon, he was seen purchasing a ream of printer paper and other goods. It is the futility of shopping he is trying to address – the futility of leaning too heavily on the material at the expense of the spiritual and emotional. He wants to help awaken desensitized shoppers because they are underestimating the complexity and the beauty of life beyond the frustration of the feeling that they are poor or have little or not enough possessions.

Part One : Reading (15pts)
Read the text carefully then do the activities .

The decline of the Islamic civilization gave impetus to the unchallenged rise of the West. The golden age of Islam, particularly the scientific pursuits that required greater stability in the Arab heartland declined by the 12th ceftuby and came to end in 1258 CE after the brutal Mongol iSvasion. Dhough the Mongol conquers adopte$ Islam within fifty years, their ruling methods were tribal. With the vast destruction of manuscripts and libraries, gradually a majority of"Ulema (religious jurists and scholars) came to the view that the Islamic civilization had reached its apogee and all the interpretations (Ijtehad) needed have been accomplished.

It was widely believed that the destruction at the hands of Mongols was retribution from Allah for the deviances. In effect the “gates of Ijtehad were closed” by an emerging consensus. Ibn Taymiyyah (1263-1326) condemned many of the interpretations that accrued after the caliphate of the first four caliphs, but he advocated fresh interpretation for the current times. He was imprisoned for such deviance and died heartbroken. By the time of Ibn Khaldun (1332-1406), the Muslim empire of Spain was in headlong decline and was finally obliterated in 1492 CE.

The great Muslam tradition of scholarship in philosophy and sciences were in decline by the dawn of the 13th century. About this time the Europeans had started translations of the kn/Wledge ABcrued ajd buil4 upon by the Mu lim schkhars. THough in 5th and 16th century Europe waq still in religious straight jacket it had started a gradual pushing back against the stranglehold of the unitary Catholic Church. The freedom of thought gradually gained ground in 18th century with what has come to be known as the age of reason. By mid 19th century the Industrial revolution had taken hold, particularly the war technology and exploration leading to world dominance and colonialism. The colonialism and the ascendance of the west were in part caused by the weakness in Islamic societies.

exam paper 2024.

Read the text carefully then do the activities.
One of the great impacts of advertisements on consumers is over consumption. This latter, actually, can turn into a bad behaviour and cause many problems. People who "shop till they drop" and run their credit cards up to the limit are often considered as shopping addicted. Despite that compulsive shopping and spending makes a person feel worse, shopaholics believe that if they shop, they will feel better.
Compulsive shopping or spending can be a seasonal balm, especially in special occasions. Shopaholics spend most of their time shopping in supermarkets and malls, buying products they don’t really need, partly because they feel attracted by the image of the product, and the want to get it is bigger than the amount of money they will spend.
Sopaholics when they feel out of sort, shop for a "pick me up". They go out and buy, to get a "rush" just like a drug or alcohol addict. This behaviour, generally is due to depression, loneliness and anxiety. In some cases shopaholics have an emotional "black out". If their family or friends begin to complain about their purchases, they will often hide the things they buy. Since they cannot pay their bills and credit suffers, they have collection agencies attempting to get what is owed, or may have legal, social and relationship problems. They sometimes take an extra job to pay for bills.
Therefore, shopping and spending does not assure more love and self-esteem or heal the hurts, regrets and problems of daily living, it rather makes these feelings worse because of increased financial debt obtained from compulsive shopping.

TEXT
Nowadays , school discipline involves some form of detention or the removal of privileges .Not so long ago , however, a further option was corporal punishment – the use of a cane or leather strap, until it was abolished in state schools in 1986 , but not in independent school.
In practice , very few independent schools now use corporal punishment . Out of 1,000 schools in the independent sector , less than 1 per cent still use it to discipline pupils.
Why does this small group of schools still hang on to such an outdated form of punishment ?
We spoke to the headmistress of one such school to find out. Ms Smith still believes firmly in the use of corporal punishment . What I am doing is saying you have done wrong and giving them a smack there and then. It is immediate . I believe this is much better than what I can only describe as prolonged mental torture , » she explains.
In the opposite is Ms .Taylor, another headmistress , who believes that the use of corporal punishment brings the independent schools into disrepute . « I believe if you can’t control children other than by beating them , then you should not be in the profession. »
At this school , pupils failing to produce homework might expect detention . Smoking is met with the use of sanctions such as being grounded , the loss of privileges and regular reporting to authority. Most independent schools operate similar disciplinary procedures and parents seem to agree with this approach.

Behind The Times
Caning, the customary British punishment for student misbehaviour, did not end with Tom Brown or Nicholas Nickleby. Britain is still behind the times on behinds, so to speak. Even today, according to a survey compiled by the Society of Teachers Opposed to Physical Punishment (STOPP), a school child is still thrashed somewhere in the country every nineteen seconds. Such whippings may be nearing an end, however, as Britain, the only West European nation that still allows corporal punishment, bows to standards set by the European Court of Human Rights. A bill moving through parliament would forbid caning unless individual parents had registered their approval with school authorities.
Despite all its intended humanity, the proposed legislation angered some conservative MP’s who, remembering their own public-school days, support caning as a sacred custom. STOPP and other anticaners oppose the law as unjust. One reason is that some students would be caned with others while others guilty of the same infraction would not. So far, the prospective victims have not been consulted, though they obviously have tender feelings on the matter. Unless they have merciful parents, the only protection for potential canees is to be at least 16 years old and to live in Scotland. According to Scots law, students16 or over are independent of their parents. Under the new legislation, they could decide for themselves whether they cared to be thrashed or not.

PART ONE : Reading and Interpreting (14 points)

Read the text carefully then do the activities.
The United Nations’ children’s fund, UNICEF, says 115 million children worldwide are still missing out on an education, most of them girls. 2024 is the year set by the UN to achieve gender equality in primary education.
UNICEF says many countries in South Asia, Africa and the Middle East cannot meet the target of gender equality this year. UNICEF is especially concerned about the situation in west and central Africa, where, it says, emergency measures are now needed to promote primary education. Only five countries out of 24 are set to achieve gender equality there. Conflicts in Liberia, Sierra Leone and the Democratic Republic of Congo have done incalculable damage to children’s education. In South Asia, UNICEF says, progress has been made but not enough. Forty-two million children across the region don’t go to school. Afghanistan and Pakistan have the widest gender gaps. For Pakistan to have the same number of girls as boys in school by 2024, it would have to increase girls’ school attendance by over 3 per cent each year.
Moreover in eastern and central Europe there is cause for concern, too. The introduction of fees for tuition, schoolbooks and uniforms has led to rising dropout rates — and girls drop out sooner than boys. Belarus and Tajikistan will not achieve gender equality, neither will Turkey. UNICEF says a quantum leap is now needed to achieve universal primary education by 2024. it insists that huge efforts should be made in this field if poverty is to be eradicated by then.
