Text: The History Of Writing

Archeologists in China discovered signs curved into 8,600-year-old tortoise****ls ( from the late Stone Age ,or Neolithic Age ). The earliest known writing dates from shortly before 3000BC , and is attributed to the Sumerians. It was mainly logographic and occurred long before a cuneiform script developed in southern Mesopotamia in the 4th century BC . It consisted of signs made with a cut reed on a moist clay tablet then sun-dried or baked in an oven.
Egyptian hieroglyphic writing is known from about 100 years after the Sumerian writing began , and it is also the earliest authentication of the principle of phonetic transfer . The Semitic peoples of Palestine and Syria borrowed it from the Egyptians , during the last half of the 2nd millennium BC . Semialphabetic writing is found in the Nile valley in Egypt , dated at about 1900 BC TO 1800 BC.
The Shang Dynasty ( 1570-1045BC) produced the earliest known written record in China. The Shang inscribed animal bones with records of the king’s predictions. Later on, the Greeks took the final step of separating the consonants from the vowels and writing each separately , thus arriving at full alphabetic writing about 800BC.
Since the 3rd century AD , thanks to the perfection of the manufacturing techniques , the spread of the use of writing on parchment ( a sheet made from treated animal skin) took place. After this kind of parchment came the codex , which more or less took the form of the books we have today. Thinner parchment was used for more precious codices which generally contained sacred texts.
The reform of writing took place during the reign of Charlemagne ( 8th -9th centuries AD ) and a regular legible new script was introduced.
In the 12th century AD , Gothic writing came into prevalence borne out of Carolingian script but using angles instead of curves.
While the Gothic script continued to be used for religious and legal works , in the 14th century , the Humanistic script came into use in Italy for classical texts . It was used in printed books. It was the Renaissance and the Western world replaced parchment with paper using techniques learnt from Arabs who in turn learnt them in China.
The first printed book in movable ****l type ( in Europe) is generally accepted as being the Bible , produced by Gutenberg in 1456 using the Gothic script . From the 16th century illustrations were adapted to the new techniques of the xylograph.

Some people may feel upset that shops during this holiday season failed to meet their expectations. Not Bill Talent, a New York priest, who has been going on the streets of the city exhorting people to resist the temptation to shop and the demon of consumerism.
Shoppers, he believes, have little regard for how or where or by whom the products are made. They have almost no resistance to the media messages that encourage them, around the clock, to want things and buy them. He sees a population lost in consumption, and the meaning of individual life vanished in a fog of wanting, buying and owning too many things.
‘Consumerism is a dull way of life,’ he says. ‘That’s why I am trying to stop this frenzy and the buy-nothing-day is meant to reduce its intensity.’
It is not that Bill Talent thinks that no one should ever buy anything. On a recent afternoon, he was seen purchasing a ream of printer paper and other goods. It is the futility of shopping he is trying to address – the futility of leaning too heavily on the material at the expense of the spiritual and emotional. He wants to help awaken desensitized shoppers because they are underestimating the complexity and the beauty of life beyond the frustration of the feeling that they are poor or have little or not enough possessions.

Behind The Times
Caning, the customary British punishment for student misbehaviour, did not end with Tom Brown or Nicholas Nickleby. Britain is still behind the times on behinds, so to speak. Even today, according to a survey compiled by the Society of Teachers Opposed to Physical Punishment (STOPP), a school child is still thrashed somewhere in the country every nineteen seconds. Such whippings may be nearing an end, however, as Britain, the only West European nation that still allows corporal punishment, bows to standards set by the European Court of Human Rights. A bill moving through parliament would forbid caning unless individual parents had registered their approval with school authorities.
Despite all its intended humanity, the proposed legislation angered some conservative MP’s who, remembering their own public-school days, support caning as a sacred custom. STOPP and other anticaners oppose the law as unjust. One reason is that some students would be caned with others while others guilty of the same infraction would not. So far, the prospective victims have not been consulted, though they obviously have tender feelings on the matter. Unless they have merciful parents, the only protection for potential canees is to be at least 16 years old and to live in Scotland. According to Scots law, students16 or over are independent of their parents. Under the new legislation, they could decide for themselves whether they cared to be thrashed or not.

PART ONE : Reading and Interpreting (14 points)

Read the text carefully then do the activities.
The United Nations’ children’s fund, UNICEF, says 115 million children worldwide are still missing out on an education, most of them girls. 2024 is the year set by the UN to achieve gender equality in primary education.
UNICEF says many countries in South Asia, Africa and the Middle East cannot meet the target of gender equality this year. UNICEF is especially concerned about the situation in west and central Africa, where, it says, emergency measures are now needed to promote primary education. Only five countries out of 24 are set to achieve gender equality there. Conflicts in Liberia, Sierra Leone and the Democratic Republic of Congo have done incalculable damage to children’s education. In South Asia, UNICEF says, progress has been made but not enough. Forty-two million children across the region don’t go to school. Afghanistan and Pakistan have the widest gender gaps. For Pakistan to have the same number of girls as boys in school by 2024, it would have to increase girls’ school attendance by over 3 per cent each year.
Moreover in eastern and central Europe there is cause for concern, too. The introduction of fees for tuition, schoolbooks and uniforms has led to rising dropout rates — and girls drop out sooner than boys. Belarus and Tajikistan will not achieve gender equality, neither will Turkey. UNICEF says a quantum leap is now needed to achieve universal primary education by 2024. it insists that huge efforts should be made in this field if poverty is to be eradicated by then.
