I) Part one : Reading comprehension.
Read the reading passage carefully then do the following activities.
Our school project of English was a survey. My group wanted to know if today’s
teenagers are more or less interested in reading books. We decided to carry out the
survey in our own secondary school – Abou El Kacem Zahraoui.
The questionnaire included 05 precise questions. We asked 100 pupils as a sample.
They were aged between 16 and 18 from the three levels; first, second and third year.
Only 31 pupils said that they enjoyed reading. Most of them did so at the school library.
“I like to read books of different subjects to broaden my knowledge”, said Ali, one of

hobbies.52 pupils said that they read only when they search for specific notes for school.
Among all the interviewees, only 03 pupils gave further details about the subject.
Khaddouja said, “The type of books I want is not available”. “That is absolutely true”,
said her friend Salem. “And if there is a chance to find one, it would be very expensive.”,
He added. Dalia, a third year pupil said, “For me, the best source of books is the internet.
E-books are more available and less expensive than books we find in libraries”.

read so often. Most pupils read a few of their school documents and while getting ready

THE FIRST TERM ENGLISH EXAM
Part One. Reading
A/ Comprehension / Read the text carefully and answer the questions
Can You Save the World?
Every day we are bombarded with advice on how to change our lifestyles to protect the environment. But how much can the average family do? And is it worth the effort and cost?
Barry and Helen Davies live with their children in a five-bedroom house. Like many families, they are concerned about the damage they do to the environment, and they would like to do more to become green consumers if they could be convinced it was worth it. The fact they have children has made them think even harder about what sort of world they will leave for the next generation. The Davies have a modern, well-insulated house. But the energy that they use in their home and in the goods and services produced for them is still polluting the atmosphere with about 47 tonnes of carbon dioxide a year. When they buy food and other goods, the Davies try to avoid taking some unnecessary packaging and try to use plastic bags more than once. They also send their bottles to be recycled in the bottle bank. But they are still contributing about 2.5 tonnes of methane to atmospheric pollution because of the waste they produce.
They are using up to 12 disposable nappies a day. The nappies contain no bleach and are labeled “environment-friendly”, but they contribute to a mounting rubbish pile. Helen would not change to old-fashioned terry nappies even though she knows that she is spending more and damaging the environment more by using the disposables. “It’s a question of convenience,” she said.
Market analysts now believe that convenience is the next battleground for the environmental movement after the initial marketing success of “environment-friendly” products. Families like the Davies can do a great deal to protect the environment and probably save money in the process. But they, like the rest of us, must ask themselves whether they are prepared to lead a more Spartan life.

The People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria

Second Term Examination
Third Year Duration: 2 hours

Part 1: Reading
Read the text carefully then do the activities:
A) Comprehension:
The marketing of junk food and fast food has become big business—some have called the food industry the next Tobacco. Companies spend top dollar on advertising to make us keenly aware of their products. The aggressive advertising is working, Pepsi spends an estimated $2.1 billion a year on marketing, McDonald’s $1.2 billion, and Coca-Cola is not far behind at $895 million.
The average child watches 10,000 food advertisements per year on television; most are for junk food and fast food—only 2% are for fruits, vegetables, or beans. Advertisements for junk food and fast food can also be seen in magazines, movies (through product placement), stores, the Internet, and even schools. What impact is this having on youth? Recent statistics indicate that 14% of children are now seriously overweight. 60% of overweight children between the ages of 5-10 years of age already have at least one risk factor for heart disease, including elevated blood cholesterol, blood pressure or increased insulin, and type 2 diabetes.
However, today’s youth, particularly girls, get mixed messages from the media. On one hand, they are bombarded daily with advertisements for junk food and fast food on television and magazines, yet the same magazines and television shows that serve up these ads also celebrate the waif look by portraying pencil-thin models. This has created a state of confusion and potential danger for many young women (and men). The National Eating Disorders Association estimates that 81% of 10-year-olds are afraid of being fat and between “5-10 million girls and women and 1 million boys and men are struggling with eating disorders including anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, or borderline conditions.”

1/ write the letter which correspond to the right answer.
a- Companies make their ads to make us :
a- Impatient, b- unconscious, c- negligent to buy their products.
b-The messages sent by adverts for junk food and fast food are to make girls :
a- Flabby, b- waif, c- dashing.
2/ Are the following statements true or false?
a- Junk food is as dangerous as smoking.

PART ONE. READING (15points)
Read the text carefully then do the activities
Education process
What happens at school is only one part of the education process. As a matter of fact, parents have to play a vital role in determining children’s success at school. There are certain things that are not fundamentally a teacher’s responsibility; these must be taught at home. For example, to value education, children should see their parents sit down and study something from time to time. Parents should also have books and set of encyclopaedias in the house to show their children how to get answers and obtain information. In the case parents are unable to afford books; they should take their children to the library and teach them how to work in it. We have to remember that a home that places no value on education is like a worn-out piece of land where nothing flourishes or grows.
The other important thing that parents must do is teach their children to respect authority. Lack of order and discipline are sometimes the major problems in classrooms. We, adults, must be more careful and demonstrate to our children that we must abide by laws and regulations and respect authority. If children hear their parents criticizing and ridiculing authority, then they will automatically lose respect for their teachers. Parents must teach their children to be honest and responsible.
They must encourage their children to do their homework alone, because there are valuable lessons in having a student complete assignment on his/her own away from the classroom. So when parents sign notes to justify why their children were absent, or why they didn’t do their homework, although they know it’s a lie; they effectively work together with the child against the school. The note may be of help for a moment but what has it done to the child’s value? Parents and teachers must work together to instil right values in children.
